Australia has beautiful night skies – the Milky Way, the Southern Cross, even the saucepan can capture people’s fascination for hours.

There’s nothing quite like gazing up at a sky awash with brilliant stars (the author is occasionally guilty of walking home while gazing up at the heavens rather than the road ahead!).

But it’s light pollution that clouds our view of the stars, making them hard to spot or even entirely invisible.

Lucky for us, and for our visitors, that the Eyre Peninsula has very little light pollution!

While any of our small towns will give you an excellent view of the skies, getting outside the town will give you a vision like few others.

The Gawler Ranges are one destination in particular for star gazing.

The only light pollution you’ll find in this gorgeous, rugged outback is what you bring with you – your torches, your campfires and your headlights.

Lay back in your swag, sit atop one of our granite outcrops or just turn your back to the fire and gaze skywards.

The brilliant Milky Way stretches above you, a canvas of starlight.

For those of you who miss the stars, or who just want a better view, camping in and around the central Eyre Peninsula is the perfect way to remedy what you’re missing.

It’s like being treated to a five-million-star hotel.

And take the kids and show them too – you might spark a new interest for them!

Our beaches are another option for star gazing, and what could be better than the combination of the ocean and the endless night sky?

From Coffin Bay all the way along the west coast to Ceduna, stopping by Elliston and Streaky Bay, you’ll be treated to epic coastal views and epic night skies.

As long as it’s not cloudy, of course.

If you needed more proof, just check out the photos – it’s time to practice your night-time photography and see if you can snap photos like this!
